Fire alarm categories explained: BS 5839-1 (L1–L5, P1–P2, M)

When you certify a fire detection and alarm system to BS 5839-1, the system category is the headline. It describes what the system is designed to do — protect life, protect property, or both — and how much of the building it covers. Get the category right and the certificate makes sense; get it vague and it doesn’t.

The three families

• M — manual systems only (break-glass call points, no automatic detection).
• L — systems for the protection of life.
• P — systems for the protection of property.

The L (life) categories

• L1 — automatic detection throughout the whole building; the highest level of life protection.
• L2 — as L3, plus detection in defined high-risk areas.
• L3 — detection to give warning early enough for everyone to escape, covering escape routes and rooms opening onto them.
• L4 — detection within escape routes only.
• L5 — a bespoke category for a specific fire-safety objective (e.g. protecting a particular room or risk).

The P (property) categories

• P1 — automatic detection throughout the building for the earliest possible property protection.
• P2 — detection in defined parts of the building where the risk of fire is high or the contents are valuable.

Why it matters on the certificate

The category should follow the fire risk assessment and the system design — it’s not something to pick at commissioning. A design/installation/commissioning certificate to BS 5839-1 records the category, any variations from the standard, and the stage being signed for, so responsibility is clear across the parties.
